One-side Mechanical Ventilation unit

Question

The unit in Mechanical Ventilation is given in Area*Time and more specifically m2*a. I cant find anywhere what exactly this means. Does anyone know if it means the cycles of the alteration of the air or just the coverage area in a certain time limit?

its the coverage, e.g. 1 m²*a means the ventilation of an area of 1m² over a time period of 1 year
