Sankey: Difference between direct contribution and upstream total

can you tell me the meaning of direct contribution and upstream total in a Sankey diagram? What's the difference?

Direct contribution is the process itself, upstream total all processes "before" this process.

Can you also explain why the the direct contribution and upstream total is often the same, even the percentage? Moreover, I don't understand why the direct contribution of processes I created myself is 0.00. Is it, because it uses the processes before which are added in upstream total?
