Good morning!

I have the following question:

I want to look at a waste treatment process from two different perspectives with two different reference flows. Here, the LCI is the same, only the perspective for both options is different:

1) treatment of 1 kg of waste

2) burden of 1kg of a selected secondary material (i.e. secondary polymer granulate)

My current approach is to build two different models in openLCA, once in the perspective of waste (1), using waste flows as intermediate flows and therefore all processes in the chain are waste treatment processes. In that case i then create a product system from the first treatment step and the product system automatically connects all subsequent treatment processes. (Since i model all waste flows I do not need any allocation there).

To get a result for 2), I am using the exact same inventory, however I am using product flows consistently as intermediate flows. This allows me to select the last treatment step of the secondary material (in the case of polymers this is the compounding step) and create a product system of it. Applying (mass) allocation, I can now calculate the impact of 1kg of secondary material.

This works so far, but I dont see any sense in using two separate models, if the inventory is the same.

Now what I am asking is: Is there a way to get both the results for 1) and 2) from one openLCA model? If yes, how?

I hope i stated my question comprehensively and look forward to your thougts.

Cheers,
Paul
