Hi there! :)

I am doing an LCA for a product. Considering the many different transportations between various manufacturers and suppliers through the products different phases I got unsure of my setup. When using the ‘market activity’ dataset for materials used in production, the transport is often already accounted for to my understanding. If the actual transport distances and means are known, should I then rather use the transforming activity, and then add the transportation manually?

Example:
For the material ‘yarn, silk’ I am currently using the provider “market for 'yarn, silk', in the Global geography.” I know the precise transport from supplier of the silk fibre, and the subsequent transport to the next manufacturer in the yarn process. Should I then rather use the specific transformation activity: ‘'yarn production, silk, short fibre - IN - yarn, silk' and add transport?

Thank you in advance!

Hello jtff,

It is always more precise and easier to argue for using your own transportation calculation. I would always recommend using primary data, if it is reliable.
